BRAMPTON: Shaking the peaceful social fabric of Canada, extortion networks targeting the Indian diaspora and business community are tightening their grip. These threats, orchestrated by organized crime mafias, are no longer just a city-level issue but have evolved into a national security crisis facing Canada. The warnings raised by Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown in Parliament underscore the gravity of this threat on a national scale.
Criminal Networks Preying on Their Own Community
Various reports indicate that the extortion threats terrifying the Indian diaspora in Canada are primarily operated by criminal gangs of Indian origin. Investigative agencies evaluate that groups led by Lawrence Bishnoi, who controls international criminal networks from prison, Goldy Brar, who is hiding in Canada, and gangster Arshdeep Singh Gill (Arsh Dalla), are behind these violent acts. The most frightening reality is that these criminal networks specifically target business owners and successful Indian immigrants within their own community in Canada.
Peel Region Under the Shadow of Fear
The Peel Region, home to one of Canada’s largest Indian diaspora populations, is becoming a primary stronghold for criminals. Between January 2024 and November 2025 alone, over 41 extortion cases were officially reported here. However, authorities admit that unreported cases are likely many times higher. These are not merely threatening messages—shootings at homes and businesses, arson, and direct physical violence are now becoming frequent. Many businesses, built through years of hard work, are currently on the verge of closure.
Transnational Criminal Networks
It is not just local Canadian gangs behind these crimes, but international criminal networks. They employ modern methods such as sending threats from abroad via encrypted platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, and conducting financial transactions through Hawala channels. Investigative reports suggest that local agents capable of carrying out violence within hours if demands are not met are operating across Canada.
Flaws in the Legal System and Police Limitations!
While criminals move rapidly in the digital age, the legal system remains trapped in outdated frameworks. Currently, police must seek international legal assistance to collect digital data. This process takes over 45 days, crippling investigations. In this context, Patrick Brown states firmly: “A hockey team cannot play without a stick; the police cannot confront this mafia without the necessary digital tools.”
What is Bill C-2 (Strong Borders Act)?
The Federal Government introduced Bill C-2 as a solution to this crisis. Its ‘Lawful Access’ provisions grant police permission to quickly access the electronic data of those involved in crimes. This allows police to trace the source of threatening messages within hours. Security agencies evaluate this as a crucial weapon to dismantle international mafia networks.
National Unity is Essential
This threat is not confined to Brampton. Similar situations are emerging in several cities, including Winnipeg, Surrey, Calgary, Edmonton, and the GTA. It is no longer a local issue—it is becoming a national epidemic. This network cannot be dismantled without strong coordination between federal agencies like CBSA, FINTRAC, and local police forces. It is a stage where Parliament must intervene urgently.
Anxieties of the Diaspora Community
Indian immigrants who arrived in Canada trusting it as a safe haven are now most fearful for their families’ safety. As bullets fly toward their homes and they are forced to pay protection money to save their businesses, the entire community asks: Can an immigrant still see Canada as their own home? Bill C-2 is not just a legislative motion; it is a protective shield to restore the faith of a shattered community.
Beyond political disputes, this law must be passed urgently by prioritizing human life. Every immigrant has the right to walk the streets of Canada without fear. This is the time for the nation to stand together.
