Musk observes that the rapid advancement of healthcare technology is outpacing the lengthy training cycles of doctors, making the traditional path to medical school increasingly “pointless.” He claims that Tesla’s Optimus robots will be capable of performing surgeries with higher precision than human surgeons within the next three years.
Musk highlights several key factors why AI is set to outperform human physicians. In surgical procedures, robots excel in Precision, eliminating human error; Fatigue Resistance, allowing for continuous work without rest; and Consistency, ensuring every complex procedure is repeated with identical quality. While it takes humans decades to master medicine, Musk points out that AI systems are being refined and updated on a monthly basis.
This digital transformation in healthcare is expected to drastically reduce the cost of treatment. Currently, a global shortage of specialist doctors often prevents many from accessing quality care. However, as robotic surgeries and AI-based diagnostic tools become universal, Musk predicts that world-class healthcare services will become available at a fraction of the current cost.
Nevertheless, this does not imply the total disappearance of doctors. Instead of performing labor-intensive tasks like surgery, the role of doctors may shift toward overseeing AI systems and handling complex ethical dilemmas. Musk adds that the 10-15 year time investment and the massive financial burden of medical studies will prompt the next generation to rethink their career paths.
